The model releases in it simplest form is an arrangement in writing as to what rights the photographer has to the picture in hand. The models signature will indicate that she or s/he has given permission to the photographer to use photographs in whatever manner is agreed in the releases. It does not necessary mean that the model that the photographer paid to shoot receives permission A photographer does not receive an instant model release if he pays a model for a photography shoot. The model release does not apply only to the photography of a human face but it may also be required for images of buildings, brand names, pets, etc. If one of the above appears a picture it cannot be published without the owners consent. When in doubt get a model release! No matter what the nature of the assignment, a model release must be signed if the person who is paying for the photograph asks for one or when the photograph is to be used for book publications or advertising.
